Counselling Approaches

Tyra Smith RSW

Registered Social Worker

As a Registered Social Worker (RSW) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, I support young children, teens, and their families through creative, trauma-informed, and play-based counselling. My strengths-based approach integrates play and art therapy methods to help children and youth express themselves, build confidence, and develop healthy coping skills.

My work focuses on social-emotional skill development and social skills coaching, helping children and youth strengthen skills such as emotional regulation, communication, problem solving, impulse control, and positive peer interaction. I often support children experiencing anxiety, big emotions, peer relationship challenges, or difficulties navigating school and everyday stressors.

Sessions are tailored to each child’s developmental needs and interests, balancing structure with creativity. Through art, movement, games, and imaginative play, children are able to explore their emotions, process experiences, and practice new skills in ways that feel natural and engaging.

I believe meaningful change begins with connection. By fostering trust, collaboration, and respect, I aim to create a therapeutic space where children and youth feel safe exploring their emotions and building confidence in themselves and their relationships.

Much of my professional experience has been gained through direct, in-home, and community-based work with children, youth, and families across rural and West-Central Saskatchewan. I have supported individuals experiencing complex emotional, behavioural, medical, and social challenges, including those affected by trauma, systemic barriers, and limited access to services.

I have extensive experience supporting neurodivergent children and youth, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and developmental or learning differences. I am committed to providing inclusive, culturally responsive care that celebrates diversity and belonging, ensuring that everyone feels seen, respected, and welcome in my office.

Outside of my professional work, I enjoy spending time outdoors, sewing, ice skating, and weightlifting, as well as connecting with friends and family.
